Can the Henry Louis Gates arrest be used to lead a productive dialogue around race? Why did Obama have to apologize for his reaction to the arrest? Is Chris Brown’s apology video too little, too late? And why didn’t Marie Claire include any women of color in its article about non-custodial mothers? Carmen Van Kerckhove, Tami Winfrey Harris, Thea Lim, and L’Heureux Dumi Lewis discuss.

I love these broadcasts but it would be very helpful if all guests were instructed to speak up and to slow down. I had trouble hearing quite a bit on this one.
Hey Masasa, thanks for your kind words! Unfortunately it’s pretty difficult to monitor sound levels through BlogTalkRadio – it’s one of the drawbacks of this format. We’ll keep working on it though.
Such a terrific show! I’m amazed at how much you packed into the hour.
Love this show. Looking forward to it every week! Thanks ladies
So, I’ve been noodling about this episode and I don’t know if this is the place for my comment/question or not, but what the heck. I’m intrigued by something that (I think) Carmen, Tami, and Thea all said. It was during the conversation about Obama’s response to the Gates incident, and each of you (again, I think, if memory serves) said something like “I don’t like that Obama had to apologize.” It is the “had to” part that intrigues me. I was wondering if there was significance in saying “had to” rather than, say, “chose to,” and if so, what that significance is. In other words, what caused the “had to” and what would the consequence have Obama disregarded the “had to” (I guess I’m thinking that “had to” implies a negative consequence of not doing…)
Did that make any sense?
Thanks, as always.
