Addicted to Race 117: Healthcare, Van Jones, Swinging, Tyra's Real Hair

by Carmen Van Kerckhove

Addicted to Race is New Demographic’s podcast about America’s obsession with race. Here’s a rundown of what you’ll find in this episode:

Did Obama’s speech on healthcare make a difference? Did racism play a role in the pressure for Van Jones to resign? A web site attempts to diversify the world of swinging, but ends up being a big #diversityfail. Tyra showed us her real hair – has she singlehandedly resolved the politics of black women and hair? Tami Winfrey Harris and Andrea Plaid discuss.

Addicted to Race is broadcast live every Sunday afternoon at 12 pm Eastern. You can listen live on our BlogTalkRadio page and call in by dialing 347-996-3958.

Tyra has had cosmetic surgery including a nose job and her ‘natural hair’ was slicked back to appear straight before she had it styled on her show.

America’s Next Top Model is fun to watch but like many entertaining things it has zero redeeming social value or intelligence.
MS J is the best part of the show and she deserves huge praise for putting a real black person who wears his hair natural in between costumes.

If she wants to be ‘the next Oprah’ Tyra needs to read more and perhaps go to college and study race and politics. She’s beautiful, funny and accomplished but not that intelligent and definitely not well read or intellectual AT ALL! She could be though.

I enjoyed listening to this, as always. WOO ATR! I did notice however, Ms. Peterson’s use of the phrase ‘beyond the pale’ in two separate conversations and was disappointed by it. It just goes to show how, even unconsciously, and even those of us who are careful, we use harmful terminology.

Root of the word: ‘Pale’ refers to Dublin and the surrounding area that was under English government during the Middle Ages. ‘Beyond the pale’ thus referred to the uncivilised, wild Irish territories. Basically the phrase is the old-school version of racism directed at the Irish. Back when they didn’t enjoy white privilege.
