Open thread and announcement: A change is gonna come (to our moderation policy)

I want to kick off this week’s open thread with an announcement. Within the next few days, Love Isn’t Enough will introduce a more aggressive moderation policy.  Many of you have expressed concern that the voices of anti-racist parents are being silenced on LIE, that in an effort to welcome new and diverse voices we have made our safe space to talk about race and parenting a not-so-safe space. We hear you, we agree and we’re working to fix the problem.

As I said earlier this year in one of our “What We Believe” posts:

At its very simplest, the purpose of this site is to be a resource for anti-racist parents. We can’t fulfill that mission properly if we’re constantly debating whether or how much race is an issue. It is an issue–that’s what we believe. There are places on the Internet where you can debate that fact all day long. This ain’t the place.

Be an anti-racist parent, be an ally or be gone.

All of us who seek to support anti-racism and other equality movements would do well to check into Derailing for Dummies from time to time. It is dangerous (and arrogant) to assume that you have totally checked your privilege–whatever that privilege may be. The site provides a good window into the sort of behaviors that prevent real conversation about equality and that will no longer be tolerated on this blog.

Now…what’s on your mind?
