I’m trying to find some good books for my 10 year old daughter. I think she’d be considered a “tween”? Anyway — she’s beyond the little girl books and a bit too young for much of the Young Adult stuff out there.
She loves stuff like The Babysitter’s Club series but I’d love to find some books on that level that feature more POC. Anything bi/multi-racial would be amazing, though simply anything that isn’t all-white would be a great starting point.
I’m combing this site and others and have lots of titles I’m going to look into but any suggestions are very welcome!
Bette Greene’s “Phillip Hall Likes Me, I Reckon Maybe” is one I remember as one of my favorites when I was about that age (there’s at least 2 more books about these same characters if she likes this one).
ashley – have you heard of the Amy Hodgepodge series?
Oh, and check out the Homework Machine series.
We have a fabulouse independent bookstore here in DC: http://www.politics-prose.com/children-and-teens
You could probably email them and I bet they’d give you some good suggestions.
Last time I went there, I found two series featuring black children, although I’ve just now realized that both authors are white. Anyway, the first is about a character called Keena Ford, by Melissa Thomson, and the second is a new series for children by Alexander McCall Smith, author fo the Ladies’ Number 1 Detective Agency.

A list of the Coretta Scott King Award winning books.
Thank you all so much! I’m going to check into all of your tips.
My daughter is 10 and reading above her age and grade level. She’s recently discovered Lauren Myracle and was entranced by a book called Luv Ya Bunches. It’s about a group of girls of various races and backgrounds who meet at the beginning of middle school and have only their names-after flowers-in common.
She also liked her series Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen, also about middle school kids trying to find their way. These also include kids of color. A fourth in the series, Thirteen Plus 1 is due out this spring I think.
Be warned though-Ms. Myracle has another series based on internet chats that are about HIGH SCHOOL and these include topics you might not want your young children reading just yet. But they’ve received high praise from older readers.
We too are also always on the lookout for books with KOC characters. We find a lot of them in Goodwill, actually.
Joining in to ask about any great series/books for a five year old reading at end-fourth to mid-fifth grade level. The biggest issue is with content, she is not socially at a 10-11 year old level. Help!
Ashley,
There are a few sites I’d like to recommend, The Happy Nappy Bookseller, Paper Tigers and Into the Wardrobe. All these sites review age appropriate titles and all review titles across race and genres.
At about that age, I enjoyed “The Secret Voice of Jina Zhang” and “Wise Child”.
