What’s on my mind?-the pain in the face of Tiger Woods mother as she listened to her son’s apology on Friday morning. The camera showed that she could not bear to look at him as he spoke, undoubtedly filled with mixed emotions, pain and anger battling for supremacy. I wondered why men of means-although not solely such men-put themselves into such a position for passing pleasures, even after having a loving partner, healthy children, and the means to provide for them without concern. The question that has become a staple of men’s magazines-”What Do Women Want?”-is possibly the wrong question. Might it be what do MEN really want? The Tiger Woods saga may provide an answer ,as uncomfortable as it may be to hear. Or am I just being too damn cynical?
I think most men in that echelon don’t truly want wives and children. They feel they are supposed to have them to look good or because as Carly Simon sang “that’s the way I always heard it should be.” When I was a nanny I saw it often. Many women get lied to but in turn many women choose men who are unfaithful and expect it will change.
On another subject, I’m saddened but not surprised how the mainstream media is essentially giving John Mayer a free pass for his racist comments. Most of the articles and headlines are covering his comments made about his sex life and not his rabid stereotypes and N bomb usage. If it were not for Racialicious, Salon and the alacrity of many determined bloggers it might have just faded into “another Playboy interview’ haze unnoticed. Mayer is on a huge world tour tour and has tie ins with many media outlets, here and in Europe, where I have yet to see any tabloid known to attack stars, report on his racism or even question it.

Great piece that I missed in Newsweek.
Totally agree, Amanda. I was listening to the radio this morning and they were discussing how good John is in concert…and there was NO mention of his racist comments! It was as if it never happened!
On my mind tonight – disturbed but not surprised. I lived in this province briefly and frequently encountered racist language from the professionals with whom I worked. And then there is this:
