It’s that time of year again! To start discussing why it is NOT APPROPRIATE for one’s children (or one’s grown up self) to “dress up” as an Indian for Halloween, and then again for freakin’ Thanksgiving. Why am I still having this conversation?! It’s beyond me why people REFUSE to get it. They can be told it’s offensive and their only rejoinder is that I (and others who think it’s wrong/bigoted/offensive to wear Indian/Mexican/Geisha/Minstrel/etc. “costumes”) should lighten up – it’s only Halloween! – and/or that political correctness is ruining everyone’s fun. Uh, NO. I love Halloween and take it about as seriously as it deserves to be taken. But I still wouldn’t let my kid wear an Indian headdress and would talk to my kid’s teacher and principal if the school was having kids dress up as a Native American, etc at Thanksgiving…

And so I bring out all my links and post them to Facebook, hoping to change some minds, enlighten someone who hasn’t thought much about it. And then there are people who just refuse, and argue with me about it. Blech…. Keep keeping on is all I can do!

    Hi!

I’m wondering if you still do your open-thread Thursdays? If so, do you or any other readers have educational resources for teaching mixed-race/mixed-heritage issues to children, particularly ages 7-13 (elementary and middle schoolers)?

I’m developing a summer cultural camp for elementary and middle school children to teach about Japanese American culture, history, and community issues. Because the Japanese American community has so many mixed-race individuals, we want to develop an activity to teach these kids about mixed-race identity issues.

Any leads, resources, activities, or workshops you have seen and/or participated in would be greatly helpful!

    Thank you,
    Paul
